Budget Updates 2017/18

Current Budget Deficit to Reduce

Projections show that by fiscal year 2019/20, TVUSD will have a $6 million dollar deficit if we don’t eliminate deficit spending.

Budget Deficit Reduction Actions to Date

During the 2016/17 school year, projections at that time showed a need to reduce by $18 million dollars by 2018/19 to remain solvent.  Financial decisions were made and reductions in the amount of almost $11 million dollars were made.   But we knew there was still work to do to reduce the total amount needed to address the ongoing deficit structure.

What is TVUSD’s Plan to Address the Current Deficit?

As with last year, the District is looking to collaborate with our bargaining unit teams of TVEA and CSEA to implement changes that will achieve ongoing budget savings by reducing spending and staff resources while maintaining fiscal solvency for the long term.

We have developed three primary budget goals that serve as our foundation for the work ahead. 

  1. Improve Student Learning
  2. Increase Ongoing Compensation for Employees
  3. Reduce Ongoing Deficit

The District is spearheading the development of three committees/focus groups (Elementary, Middle, and High School) to research and review potential opportunities for alternate work models in support of the three identified budget goals.  The committees/focus groups will be led by Mr. Raymond Johnson, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, in collaboration with teachers, administrators, and members of TVEA leadership.  In addition, the District continues to share information through the collaborative Budget Adhoc Committee.

How Can I Stay Informed?

An area that we will focus on this year is communication with all stakeholders to build a greater understanding of the current fiscal challenge, as well as opportunities to be involved in the overall process and development of potential changes.

Along with the committees’ work, the District will use all available communication structures to offer opportunities for participation, input, and sharing of information.  These include but are not limited to:
